Thank-you Catherine. What an enjoyable and informative read. You have touched on so many topics here and I’m really looking forward to hearing you expand on them. Personally, I’ve always fancied a haybox but at the moment I’m happily experimenting with my new KR 😊

You've got to love NPR. I have been concious of the increased cooking time, and therfore the reduction in amount of time that the Instant Pot is heating for (and therfore consuming electricity) but I also love it because you are not releasing steam into the kitchen, and living in an old building (some of the time) this is very apreciated to keep the humidity down. :)

Yes, in fact that's one thing I forgot to mention - it is excellent regarding keeping the steam to the minimum!

Thanks for this post Catherine. I’ve recently brought a crockpot and a copy of Modern Pressure Cooking! I am a bit puzzled as to how to know that the pressure will have dropped naturally as the manual is quite limited but I’m assuming from your post then everything will stay nice and hot so I can relax about timings somewhat. Really pleased with the recipes so far, the ability to cook pulses so quickly is fantastic.

Thank you! Glad the recipes are working well for you. Is there any kind of pressure gauge on your crock pot?

There’s not I’m afraid. Just says pressure might take 10-30 minutes to drop so a bit vague. Planning the Greek pasta with chicken tonight that needs a quicker release I think so will have a play about and see.

That isn't very helpful, is it? With NPR, one of the indications is whether the lid starts to feel looser - I would start checking after around 5 minutes, it shouldn't ever be longer than 10.....it isn't really an issue unless you want to eat sooner! or things are in danger of overcooking.

I was working, so not entirely sure. Probably more than an hour.

The soaking was in warm water with some salt and a tsp of bicarb. 3 to 4 h perhaps.

NPR is brilliant! I used it yesterday to cook some soaked Hodmedod's chickpeas. I did 1 min + NPR and they were done! Perfectly cooked, yay! - When I think I used to cook chickpeas for *hours*!

I use an InstantPot and just turn the power off when it finishes cooking at pressure. Super easy.

It is amazing, isn’t it? How long did you leave your chickpeas for? I do it until the cooker is cool….

Thank you for last night in Highworth. A great evening, and I look forward to getting a lot more use out of my Instant Pot as a result. I’ve also been online window shopping for one of those cute little Kuhn Rikon stove tops - I was very taken with the little pointy lid!

Thank you for coming! Really glad you got something out of it. There are often good deals on the Kuhn Rikon site which is a good thing as they aren’t the cheapest!

Another great, illuminating post, Catherine. I first heard of hay boxes when I read The Children Who Lived in a Barn too - was fascinated!

Thanks Jenny, you are always so encouraging! I reread The Children Who Lived in a Barn last year and really enjoyed it - funny the haybox was my strongest memory of it!
